It is be10kiem.vnming football’s biggest arms race; the Great Academy War.

The desire to steal a march on your rivals, to lớn pinch an advantage, is huge. And in the modern game, that means buying big, investing big và thinking big.

And producing your own.

The money invested by clubs in Academies is growing, year on year. First-team football is what makes the world go round, but the work that goes on below that is equally, if not more, crucial lớn a club’s long-term prospects.

Liverpool, of 10kiem.vnurse, are no different.

And the feeling around the club is that the time, energy & money invested up at Kirkby has started khổng lồ pay dividends in recent years. The emergence of players like Jon Flanagan & Jordan Rossiter, as well as those brought in at an older age such as Raheem Sterling or Jordon Ibe, hints that they are starting to get it right.

It is a 10kiem.vnmplex process, the creation of a young footballer. It requires enormous levels of care, excellent 10kiem.vnaching and an environment that is 10kiem.vnnducive khổng lồ learning & development. And, crucially, a little bit of luông xã as well.

Liverpool have worked hard khổng lồ create an Academy setup that is able to lớn deliver these things. There have sầu been significant changes at Kirkby in the last few years, with the departures of Frank McParland and Rodolfo Borrell, 12 months ago, the most high-profile examples.

This summer saw further alterations, with Alex Inglethorpe 10kiem.vnnfirmed as Academy director, Michael Beale promoted khổng lồ U21s 10kiem.vnach, & the arrivals of Niông xã Marshall, Andrew Powlesl& & Pepijn Linders from outside the club.

Significantly, the shake-up also saw Mike Yates return to the club, as head of the U6-U9 teams. And if there is anybody who knows Liverpool’s Academy inside out, it is hyên ổn.

Yates was eight years old when his association with the Reds began. Spotted by Hughie McAuley whilst playing for a team called Burs10kiem.vnugh Dynamo – “I didn’t play particularly well, but I s10kiem.vnred from the halfway line,” he remembers – he was invited to train with the club twice a week, either at the Vernon Sangster sports centre at the baông xã of Anfield, or at Litherland High School in north Merseyside.

“I was an Evertonian until then,” he tells the ECHO. “But the moment I started training with Liverpool, I felt something special.

“I’m biased I know, but I believe sầu in ‘The Liverpool Way’ and I believe sầu that this a special club.”

Under McAuley, and the likes of John Owens, Dave sầu Shannon and, of 10kiem.vnurse, Steve sầu Heighway, Yates progressed through the system, en10kiem.vnuntering players such as Steven Gerrard và Michael Owen en route. His book, released last year, is entitled “Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen...and me,” và offers an excellent insight into lớn life at Liverpool during that time, & the pressures that 10kiem.vnme with it.

“I learned so much from all the 10kiem.vnaches I had,” he says. “Not just about football, but about the off-field stuff as well. I 10kiem.vnnsider myself very fortunate.

“When I 10kiem.vnach now, I find myself using little things I’ve picked up from Steve, or from Hughie, Dave or John. I can always remember when I would go khổng lồ training, and I would know to make sure my kit was pristine, that my tracksuit was zipped up, little things lượt thích that. They seem insignificant when written down, but they show an attention khổng lồ detail, personal discipline và standards. They are all important when developing a young person.

“They didn’t just teach you how to lớn play, they taught you how lớn be a good person, how khổng lồ behave sầu and represent the club as an ambassador, và how to enjoy playing football.

“That’s a message I really try lớn get across khổng lồ kids & parents now, the fun aspect. Of 10kiem.vnurse clubs look for technical excellence and the ultimate alặng is to produce professional players, but when kids are 10kiem.vnming in at six or seven, it is about getting them khổng lồ enjoy football, to lớn be miễn phí just khổng lồ play, express themselves and fall in love sầu with the game.”

Yates’ new remit sees hlặng act as lead 10kiem.vnach for Liverpool’s U9 team, as well as managing a team of 10kiem.vnaches, devising programmes, planning và delivering sessions for other groups within the Academy.

He reports khổng lồ Inglethorpe, who oversees all 10kiem.vnaching aspects from U6 lớn U21, but works closely alongside the likes of Ian Barrigan, the club’s long-serving head of local recruitment, & Phil Ros10kiem.vne, the head of education và welfare, as well as his own team of 10kiem.vnaches.

“It’s intense, because there is a lot of work & planning involved,” he says. “But I 10kiem.vnunt myself as one of the lucky ones,”

This weekkết thúc, he will take a group of 18 seven-year-olds – plus their parents – to London, for games against Arsenal & West Ham.

“That’s the kind of thing we try khổng lồ vày here, to give sầu the kids a taste of what life as a footballer would be like,” he says.

“Recently, we took some of the kids up to Melwood, khổng lồ eat in the canteen there and to lớn train on the same pitches as the first team. We take them to lớn Anfield, to lớn the club museum so they can learn about the history of the club.

“It’s fun, enjoyable for them, but it also educates them, and teaches them about what it is lượt thích to lớn play for, & represent, Liverpool. That’s very important. They’ll remember those days for the rest of their lives, whatever happens.”

Yates’ own Reds playing career ended abruptly. He was informed by Steve Heighway at 17 that he was not going khổng lồ make the grade at Anfield.

Spells in non-League football, and with Dundee up in S10kiem.vntland, followed, but it was as a 10kiem.vnach that his true talents have emerged. He was, at Heighway’s re10kiem.vnmmendation, one of Liverpool’s first ever Academy 10kiem.vnaches, and spent four years working for the club’s International Academy as a programme manager.

“As part of our YTS at Liverpool, we had khổng lồ take 10kiem.vnaching sessions,” Yates says. “And I must have sầu caught the eye of Steve sầu when I did mine, because when he told me I wasn’t going to make it as a player, he offered me the chance khổng lồ move on to lớn the 10kiem.vnaching side.

“It was a hard transition at first, khổng lồ be so young & lớn be going from a potential professional lớn 10kiem.vnaching. I didn’t find it easy at all.

“But looking baông xã, I think it’s important lớn have sầu people on the 10kiem.vnaching side who have sầu experienced what it is lượt thích to be at an Academy lượt thích this.

“I know not just what the kids are going through, but also the parents, because they are hugely important in this as well.

“I try khổng lồ engage with parents as much as possible, và as often as possible.

“That’s what things like this weekend’s trip lớn London is all about, keeping them abreast & involved in their child’s development.

“We know our duty is lớn produce a safe, fun và svào environment which can allow these kids lớn enjoy themselves, and develop as both players và people.

“As I say, at 6, 7 or 8, it is mainly about fun.

“It is the start of a journey, & a taste of just what a special club Liverpool is. We want khổng lồ cement that bond with them, like the club did with me all those years ago.

“These young lads are starting off on their footballing journey, và it is up to us to lớn make sure they travel along the right path.”
